Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

✔ Finding that stress or trauma is affecting your relationships, family life, work, school, or everyday well-being?

✔ Watching your child or teen struggle with big emotions, difficult behaviors, anxiety, or social challenges?

✔ Experiencing conflict, communication difficulties, or changing dynamics within your relationship or family?

About Our Practice

At Montgomery County Counseling Center, we understand that emotional well-being doesn't exist in isolation. The way you feel can affect how you behave, how you connect with others, and how your family or relationships function.

Our therapists take a systemic, evidence-based approach to care, helping you better understand the connections between your emotions, behaviors, and relationships while developing skills that support meaningful, lasting change.

And because different members of a family may need different kinds of support, our collaborative team allows children, teens, adults, couples, and families to receive care within the same practice. When multiple members of a family work with our therapists, our team can coordinate care so everyone is working toward aligned goals.

Our Therapeutic Approaches

Montgomery County Counseling Center provides mental health services for the whole family. Depending on what you or your family needs, support may involve individual therapy or working with relationships and the broader family system.

Montgomery County Counseling Center

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): An evidence-based treatment that supports people experiencing intense emotions, reactivity, and maladaptive coping behaviors by building skills around both acceptance and change.

Radically Open DBT (RO-DBT):

An evidence-based approach for patterns of emotional overcontrol, including emotional repression, rigid thinking, and social signaling. RO-DBT works toward greater openness, flexibility, and authentic connection.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):

A structured, present-focused approach that helps identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns that keep you stuck. CBT can be especially helpful for people who prefer practical, skills-based tools over open-ended talk therapy.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR):

Uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their emotional charge. Often used for trauma and PTSD, EMDR can also help when what you feel doesn't match what you know to be true.

Gottman Couples Method:
A research-based approach to couples therapy using structured exercises and tools to strengthen friendship, manage conflict, and build shared meaning.

Internal Family Systems (IFS):

A type of trauma therapy that identifies different parts of your inner experience, many of which formed for protection. IFS builds compassion for wounded or protective parts while moving toward internal balance and self-leadership.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP):
A structured approach that gradually exposes you to feared thoughts or situations while helping you resist compulsions and avoidance. ERP is an evidence-based treatment for OCD and other anxiety and phobia disorders driven by avoidance.

Play Therapy:
A developmentally appropriate approach for children ages 3–12 that uses children's natural language of play to help them process emotions, experiences, and behaviors they may not yet be able to express in words.

FAQs

Do you accept insurance?

Montgomery County Counseling Center is an out-of-network, fee-for-service practice and does not accept insurance directly. Payment is due at the time of service. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement. MCCC provides current clients with monthly superbills that can be submitted to insurance for potential reimbursement.

What can I expect when I reach out?

You don't need to know exactly what kind of therapy or therapist you need before reaching out. After submitting an inquiry, MCCC's intake team can help determine what kind of support may make sense and match you with an appropriate therapist.

How will I know if therapy is working?

This looks different for everyone. The first and most important piece is rapport fit. On average you should know within about 3 sessions if you're matched with a good fit. From there, you and your therapist should be explicitly defining what it would mean for you to feel like it's working.

How long does therapy take?

By session 8, you should generally feel there's been value from the process. That may or may not mean your goals have been met… but you should definitely feel some value. Some people stay months, others stay years, depending on how life, goals, and therapy evolve. This also depends on the type of therapy; some evidence-based models have clearer timeframe expectations.

What issues do you help with?

MCCC works with a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and relationship concerns, including anxiety, depression, big emotions and maladaptive coping behaviors (ie: self-harm, suicidal ideation, substance use, eating disorders etc), relationship and family concerns, perfectionism and people pleasing, neurodivergence including ADHD and autism, performance pressure and athlete mental health, trauma, grief and loss, parenting difficulties, and young adult development.

Do you work with children and teens?

Yes. MCCC provides individual therapy for children ages 5 and older, teens, young adults, and adults.

Do you offer couples and family therapy?

Yes. MCCC provides couples counseling, family therapy, and parent coaching. Our team can support different members of your family based on their individual and shared needs.

Can multiple members of our family receive therapy at MCCC?

Yes. One of the advantages of MCCC's collaborative model is that multiple members of your family can receive support within the same practice. When appropriate, therapists can coordinate care and work toward aligned goals while each person receives support for their own needs.

Is online therapy effective?

Yes. MCCC offers both online and in-person therapy. For telehealth, you need to work with a clinician who is licensed in the state where you are physically located at the time of your appointment. Some clients and situations are better served in person whenever possible. You and your clinician can make the call on what will be effective.

How do I get started?

Complete the MCCC inquiry form to tell the team what you're looking for. If you'd like a consultation or if we need more information to make the right match, you'll speak with the intake coordinator for a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your needs and next steps.
